Child or Other Dependant Sponsorship

Child or Other Dependant Sponsorship

By enabling Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are the parents of a child living abroad to apply to sponsor their child or another dependent for Canadian permanent residency, the family sponsorship programme aids in the reunion of families.

Definition of a Dependent Child

Children must fit the definition of a dependent child to qualify for sponsorship. A kid is regarded as a dependent if they are under 22 years of age, are not married, or are in a common-law relationship, regardless of whether they are the biological or adopted child of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. If a kid above the age of 22 has a physical or mental impairment that makes it impossible for them to support themselves, they will be regarded as a dependent.

Dependent Child Sponsorship Requirements

Like all family sponsorship streams, for the child to be awarded permanent residency, both the sponsor and the sponsored person must be eligible. Parents who want to sponsor their child must meet the following requirements:
- Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who reside in Canada
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not be incarcerated, facing serious charges, or insolvent
Additionally, parents will need to present documentation of their link to the child, such as a birth or adoption certificate. Before the adoption is legally finalised, parents who are nearing the finish of the adoption procedure may sponsor the child. The sponsored individual, in addition to fitting the definition of a dependent child, must either be the biological child of the adoptive kid of the sponsor or the sponsor's spouse, or the sponsor themselves.

Sponsoring a Dependent Child in Quebec

The Canadian sponsor will have to make a financial commitment to support the family member they are sponsoring if they live in Quebec. Depending on the nature of the relationship, the project's duration will vary. If the dependent kid is under the age of 16, the sponsor is required to make a 10-year financial commitment, or until the child is 18, whichever comes first. If the dependent child is 16 or older, the sponsor is required to make a three-year financial commitment, or until the child is 25, whichever comes first.

Dependent Child Sponsorship Minimum Necessary Income

As long as the dependent kid does not have any children of their own, sponsors who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents are exempt from having to earn the minimum necessary income (MNI). The sponsor must meet the MNI requirements for their family unit size if the sponsored dependent kid has dependent children of their own.
